Follow The Way Of The Apostles

The beauty of religious life is that it creates a discipleship process for its faithfuls. For disciples of our Master, Yeshua (The Promised Messiah for Israel), they patiently waited for the promised Set-Apart Spirit before embarking on the work given to them by the Master and remain committed to The Way that was handed over to them.

The common view among most Christians today is that Yeshua came to abolish the Old Testament laws and that Paul taught that keeping these laws was no longer necessary for Christians. But what does the book of Acts reveal about what the early Church thought and did? Does it support this view, or does it show us something very different? Was it in conflict with typical Jewish custom and practice of the day as laid down in the Old Testament?

Look at the evidence yourself—you be the judge!

Acts 2:1 —The New Testament Assembly miraculously began when the members were assembled on the Feast of Pentecost (also called the Feast of Weeks or Firstfruits), in accordance with Yahweh’s commands of Leviticus 23:15-16, Leviticus 23:21 and Deuteronomy 16:16.

Acts 2:46 —The early Assembly met daily “with one accord in the temple.”

Acts 5:19-20 —After the apostles were imprisoned, an angel told the apostles to continue teaching at the temple.

Acts 5:21, Acts 5:25, Acts 5:42 —The apostles continued teaching in the temple.

Acts 5:32 — Peter taught that Yahweh gives His Holy Spirit “to those who obey Him.”

Acts 6:7 —”A large number of priests became obedient to the faith” (NIV)—they saw no contradiction between The Way and their roles as priests.

Acts 7:1-53 —Stephen explained that Yeshua and The Way are the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and a natural outgrowth of what the Old Testament scriptures foretold.

Acts 8:26-39 —Philip explained to the Ethiopian eunuch how Yeshua is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies.

Acts 9:20 —Immediately after his miraculous conversion, Paul “preached the Messiah in the synagogues” in Damascus.

Acts 10:14 —About a decade after Yeshua’s crucifixion and resurrection, Peter said, “I have never eaten anything common or unclean”—he obviously was continuing to obey Yahweh’s laws regarding clean and unclean meats found in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.

Acts 11:8 — Peter recounted the event, saying, “Nothing common or unclean has at any time entered my mouth.”

Acts 13:5 —In Salamis on Cyprus, Paul and Barnabas “preached the word of Yahweh in the synagogues of the Jews.”

Acts 13:14-41 —In Pisidian Antioch, Paul and Barnabas taught in the synagogue on the Sabbath, explaining from the Old Testament scriptures that Yeshua was the prophesied Messiah and Son of Yahweh.

Acts 13:42 —At the conclusion of this synagogue service, “the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.” If the Sabbath were done away, Paul and Barnabas missed a golden opportunity to explain to these gentiles that they could teach them the very next day—Sunday—or any other day. Instead they met again the next Sabbath!

Acts 13:44 —”On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of Yahweh” taught by Paul and Barnabas. In all of the many mentions of Paul teaching on the Sabbath, not once is there so much as a hint that they need not be there to observe the Sabbath as commanded, nor any hint that they should instead meet on Sunday.

Acts 14:1 — Paul and Barnabas taught in the synagogue in Iconium.

Acts 15:20-21 —At the conclusion of the Jerusalem conference on the issue of circumcision, the Apostles pointed gentile believers to regulations that would allow them to meet alongside Jews in synagogues, where “Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath” (NIV).

Acts 16:13 —In Philippi, Paul met with Jews on the Sabbath beside a river and taught them about Yeshua.

Acts 17:1-2 —In Thessalonica, Paul, “as his custom was,” went to the synagogue “and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures.”

Acts 17:10-11 —In Berea, Paul and Silas “went into the synagogue of the Jews” and taught, after which their hearers “searched the [Old Testament] Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.”

Acts 17:17 —In Athens, Paul reasoned in the synagogue with Jews and gentiles.

Acts 18:4 —In Corinth, Paul “reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.”

Acts 18:19 —In Ephesus, Paul “entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.”

Acts 18:21 — Paul departed Ephesus, saying, “I must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem”—in accordance with Yahweh’s command in Deuteronomy 16:16.

Acts 19:8 —After returning to Ephesus, Paul “went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months.”

Acts 20:6 — Paul and his group “sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread,” one of Yahweh’s festivals commanded in Leviticus 23:6 and Deuteronomy 16:16.

Acts 20:16 — Paul changed his travel plans because “he was hurrying to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the Day of Pentecost,” another of Yahweh’s festivals.

Acts 21:20 —In Jerusalem, the apostles told Paul that “many thousands of Jews have believed [in Yeshua], and all of them are zealous for the law” (NIV). They saw no contradiction between The Way and the laws they had always followed.

Acts 21:21-26 —To counter false accusations that he taught against the law and to show that he himself was “living in obedience to the law” (NIV), Paul joined with several men to be purified at the temple and to pay their expenses for their rites and offerings.

Acts 24:14 — Paul, in a legal hearing before the Roman governor Felix, stated that he worshiped the Elohim of his fathers according to The Way and believed “all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets”—the Old Testament.

Acts 25:8 —In a legal hearing before the next Roman governor, Festus, Paul said, “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I offended in anything at all.”

Acts 27:9 —Luke noted that sailing in the Mediterranean Sea in late autumn “was now dangerous because the Fast”—a reference to the Day of Atonement, one of Yahweh’s Holy Days (Leviticus 23:27)—”was already over.”

Acts 28:17 —Speaking to the Jews in Rome where he was now a prisoner, Paul told them, “I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers.”

The record from the book of Acts couldn’t be clearer. Paul and the early Church were not at odds with the laws of the Old Testament! They knew that Yeshua’s ultimate role was to restore the Kingdom to Israel (Acts 1:6).

Having seen that the Apostles maintained all the believers under the tag, ‘The Way’ (both Jews and Gentiles) and upheld the Law (Romans 3:31); is it not then proper that all those who have come to believe in Yeshua as the Promised Messiah of Israel should also worship Yahweh according to The Way?

ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE POOR

The designation of Nigeria as World Headquarters of Poverty naturally should have provoked many people who profess to be Bible believers to live a more righteous life.

The central theme of the Bible is LOVE towards the Creator and fellow mankind. This attribute is specifically demanded from the one who is ‘better off’ towards the poor.

In Deuteronomy 24, many verses contain commands to be fair towards the poor and not to take advantage of them. Specifically, verses 19 – 21 asked that we set aside provisions from our possessions for the poor:

Deuteronomy 24:19-21
19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Yahweh your Elohim may bless you in all the work of your hands.
20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow.
21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow.

In the times of the Apostles, the body of believers made it a custom to bring all they had to the Apostles’ feet and distribution was made to everyone as he needs. This arrangement ensured that none of them lacked in the long run (Acts 4:34-37). The bottom line is that the Most High had given unto mankind all that it needs but distributed unevenly for efficient management.

Whatever anyone has, be it Time, Talent, Treasure or Temple, is given to him to manage by the Creator. Yahweh expects us all to ensure that our endowments are used to make our world a pleasant place.

In what way are you helping those in need? What fairness are you showing towards them? Do they mean anything important to you? Dont forget what King David declared in Psalm 41: “Blessed is the man who considers the poor……”

If truly you believe in the reator and you have His Spirit in you, you MUST show love for the poor in our midst. Change your perception towards the poor and the downtrodden today!

THE ETERNAL MESSAGE

Every one loves to have interaction with those whose principles and ways of doing things do not change. This makes them to be able to predict outcomes and thereby make life easier for themselves. They know where to thread and what not to do.

The interesting thing is that the Creator is the most constant factor in all existence. He is an Eternal being with eternal principles and Words. He declared in Malachi 3:6 that “I am Yahweh and change not”.

Throughtout Scripture, He made promises, spoke words, initiate covenants, brought forth ideas and gave commands that are eternal. In Him, there is no variation. This same attribute was declared by Yeshua and his disciples. There are many places where they spoke words regarded as ‘message you heard from the beginning’.

One of such messages is, “that we should love one another” (1 John 3:11). Yeshua and his disciples knew very well that the demand to love one another was as old as the creation of man itself. Since Yahweh is love, love was from the beginning.

Are you then walking in the path that birth your creation? Have you forgotten the age-long saying, “the sea that forgets its source will become dry”? When you refuse to love your fellow human being, you cut yourself off from your Creator and wither away. Live in love today.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF

If your are conversant with the Scriptures, you will know that the many commandments of Yahweh are summarized into two. Love towards the Creator (Yahweh) and love towards your neighbour. The Messiah, Yeshau, stated that on these two commandments hung all the Laws & Prophets.

The commandment to love your neighbour as yourself was mentioned once in the Jewish Bible in Leviticus 19 verse 18, while it was mentioned eight times in the writings of the followers of Yeshua.

Jewish commentaries stated that this one commandment is the summary of the Torah, an assertion Shaul (Paul) repeated in one of his epistles. How come that this simple commandment is so difficult for many to keep?

The simple answer is ‘The Self’. We are so preoccupied with self that the other person’s need and desire is secondary to ours. We see ourselves as more important than others. The acceptable love toward others is that which equates the love we have for ourselves.

This kind of love not only do good things for others but stops us from behaving negatively towards them when they do wrong to us. That is why it is placed with “You shall not avenge nor bear grudge against the children of your people” in the same verse.

Many times we are wronged by others and pushed to retaliate. The issues may not be a big one as we suppose. It could be as simple as a friend refusing to accompany us to a function and we do the same thing when we are asked to follow the friend to another place.

Perfect love is treating others as we will treat ourselves or the way we want to be treated. Show true love today!

THE FIRST COMMANDMENT

Many will not know the 1st commandment of the Ten as read by Yeshua in his days on earth. We all grew up to know (as taught by the church) that the first commandment is ‘Thou shall not have any other god beside me’

However, the list of the 10 commandments in the 1st Century has ‘I am Yahweh your Elohim, who brought you out of Egypt, the house of bondage’ as number 1. It is known that as the church was moving away from Judaism and dropping it’s Jewish identity, it has to also drop the personalisation of the Most High as ‘The Elohim of Israel’ and adopt the global identity of ‘Creator of the World’.

What the church did not know is that changing the first commandment is tantamount to removing the foundation and the pillar of the 10 commandments. The personal touch in the 1st commandment is not to make the commandments Jewish but to present the basis of the relationship that is needed between man and Yahweh. It is not about a Creator/Creation relationship but a Liberator/Freed Man one.

The 1st commandment is a command to the people of Israel to believe in Yahweh not as anything but as a Liberator, a Redeemer and a Savior. It could have been sweeter if Yahweh had referred to Himself as ‘Creator of the World’ or ‘Elohim of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob’ while commanding Israel; but those decriptions will not explain why the Israelites have to obey His voice and keep the covenant.

The purpose of the commandments is to set the Israetites free from every type of bondage that exist in the world. Obeying Yahweh and keeping the commandments give life to anyone. The commandments are to give life and not to keep anyone in bondage.

The word ‘Egypt’ is translated from ‘Mistrayim’ which means ‘a fencing to limit’. It means to keep in bondage. Every one is limited in experiencing life as given by Yahweh by the corruption in this world. The commandments are to help us remove these limitations and set us free. Have you wondered why Yeshua said that “I have come to give life and give it more abundantly”? It is beacuse he came to bear witness to the truth (the Torah) by teaching it accurately.

The basis of our relationship with Yahweh is to receive freedom from Him by living according to His word. Knowing Him as Creator of the World is not enough, knowing Him as Father of the Patriarchs will only help our faith but knowing Him by keeping His commands will give us LIFE.
